Annual Christmas Event To Benefit Mel Trotter Ministries

‘Tis the Time of Year to join me and your friends with the Priority Health Cycling Teams at McFaddens at 58 Ionia Ave SW in downtown Grand Rapids to collect some needy items and cash (always needed) for our less fortunate brothers of this community. This annual gathering of the local cycling clan ( including roadies, Mountain bikers and cross racers) allows us all to be thankful for what we have and what we can give to others. This wonderful gathering started several years ago as a small group of cyclists from a local church and has grown to include the greater community. The Mel Trotter Mission, when asked what they could use for these men responded quickly “ we always need underwear and socks 24/7 all year round”. Thus, the underwear and sock theme. When deciding how much to spend or bring remember how much we all spend on cycling stuff year round. These guys need our help and together we can do a great thing while enjoying each others company with a beer or sandwich or both in hand. Bring your family, friends, teammates, favorite mechanic, personal trainer, etc. the more the merrier! Join us at McFaddens on Ionia Ave SW on Wednesday December 16th at 7 pm till ???? We will have the upper room completely to ourselves complete with bar, pool tables, big screen TV and loungers. Last year was the best year ever as we raised a few thousand dollars and enough underwear and socks to fill 2 minivans!!!

Thanksgiving Opportunity - Turkey Burner Ride

We have had this up on the WMMBA website http://westernmmba.blogspot.com/ for a while but I keep getting inquires, so clearly the word is not out! Yes, we are doing the Turkey Burner and here is the stuffing!

Western MMBA's "Turkey Burner Ride". Once again this ride will be held on the Friday following Thanksgiving (November 27th, 2009) at the Deep Lake trailhead, Yankee Springs Recreation Area. Arrive in time to depart the parking lot at 10:00am+/- plan on riding for a of couple hours, then up to Middleville's "Champs Bar" for a bite to eat and a cold beer. Enjoy the holiday and the last organized WMMBA Ride of 2009. All levels are invited, as we will break into 2 or 3 groups depending on the speed and experience of those in attendance.
Please pass this along to your friends and we'll see you for the Turkey Burner. RSVP not required, just show up and feel that turkey burn!

Saturday, 3/21 - MTB (Normal or Long Lake) - Essential Bean

There’s been a slight change to this week’s rides....we were a little too optimistic with regards to the weather and will no longer be offering a road ride...additionally there are several riders that want to “pre-ride” the Barry-Roubaix route this week so here’s what we are proposing.

Everyone that wants to ride MTB’s will still meet behind Essential Bean at 7:45am

You’ll a couple of options:

Greg P. and Joe R. are planning on driving to Long Lake Outdoor Center, out near Yankee Springs and riding for a couple of hours so if you want to ride with them, just follow them out to the start location

The remaining riders can choose to ride the Paul Henry or Duncan Lake route

Lastly, I have a couple of CalCycling jersey’s available so if you interested, let me know

Tour of California: Tim Z's & Tom B's - Pictures & Perspective

Tim Z and Tom B. did make it out to CA and watched stages 1-3. The weather was miserable, but it was worth it. Here's brief summary, perspective and a couple of pictures:

Stage 1:
Watched the finishing circuits in Santa Rosa so it was pretty cool to see the race leaders from Rock Racing, Liquigas and Quick-Step battle it out.

Stage 2:
Watched the first KOM climb and then saw them finish in Santa Cruz.

Stage 3:
Got to watch the start in San Jose, the first KOM climb and then the circuit finish in Modesto.

There were really a couple of impressions that we walked away with:

Lance is intimidating on the bike, when he’s pulling or climbing his facial expression is just nasty;

You have to spend a lot of time getting in position to see them ride by and in about 12 sec they are gone and it’s over; and

How accessible the riders, their bikes and equipment are to the general public.
